SCCA News:

The SCCA league season is slated to begin with the Six-A-Side Trophy on March 20. The league proper will
commence the following weekend, March 27.The SCCA has been expanded to four divisions. The top 36 form
three upper divisions of 12 teams each, with the new Division 4 accommodating 9 (mostly new) teams. Casuals
happily squeaked into Division 3.The top three divisions will play a 'super league/star league' format. Each team
will play every other team once (for an initial 11 games). Then, the division is divided into two groups, top six, bottom
six. The respective sub-divisions have a further 5 games but only against teams in their sub-division. The original
top six and the top two teams from the bottom six go into the play offs. The two top teams from league play
only (first 11 games) are promoted and the bottom three teams are relegated. The playoffs will have their own
trophy, but will not affect promotion. All this means that each team should be guaranteed at least 16 games, with
the added incentive of a further three playoff matches. The dues to the SCCA have been kept at the same level as last
year ($2100). However, there is now a penalty for late payment, so we must send our money in by May 14. Your
president, wearing his SCCA hat, has succeeded in lifting the majority of the restrictions laced on the movement
of players between the Casuals and the Corinthians, which caused us so much trouble last year. He did have to
make a compromise or two from his original proposal, but it is definitely an improved situation. Broadly, the SCCA
will implement a 'seeding' system, whereby 50% of each team's roster will be frozen. In effect, this 50% will be the
recognized senior, quality players, and these players will not be allowed to move down or up. However, the
remaining 50% can move freely between teams (a maximum of two players at a time) until the end of the
11th game (prior to the start of the 'super/star' leagues.) It's not perfect, but it's much better than last year when we
were all frozen after just 4 games. Also, our President was able to talk the SCCA into buying coconut matting wickets
for *all* the outlying grounds. This should mean that all our away games will be played on better and more consistent
surfaces. He has also authored a 'Grounds Standards' document which will be applied and administered to all
the non-Woodley teams. No more pink carpets!

We've asked for no games over the October 16/17 weekend for the second leg of the Los Verdes Golf tourney. We may get a Woodley ground on the Saturday for a festival/70th Anniversary match. Assuming Hawaii *doesn't* go ahead, we have also asked for a ground for the W.G.Grace Game on April 11.
